As part of efforts to transform its livestock sector, the Plateau State Government has commenced the construction of a modern abattoir with the capacity to process up to 500 cattle daily.
The facility, situated within the Heipang Special Agro Processing Zone in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, is expected to play a central role in the state’s strategy to develop a thriving agro-industrial economy driven by value addition, modern processing and increased private sector investment.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Governor Caleb Mutfwang said the project demonstrates the state’s commitment to unlocking greater economic value from livestock production and creating sustainable opportunities across multiple sectors.
According to the governor, the modern abattoir will improve meat processing standards, enhance food safety and stimulate economic activities along the livestock value chain.
He noted that the facility is expected to generate employment opportunities, support livestock producers and encourage investments in meat processing and related industries.
Governor Mutfwang emphasized that the project forms part of broader efforts to position Plateau State as a major hub for agricultural processing and industrial development.
The governor further stated that value addition remains critical to maximising the economic benefits of agriculture and improving incomes for farmers and other stakeholders.
Stakeholders at the event described the project as a major milestone in the state’s agricultural transformation agenda, noting that modern infrastructure is essential for increasing competitiveness and promoting sustainable development.
When completed, the abattoir is expected to strengthen the livestock sector improve the quality of processed meat products and contribute significantly to food security and economic growth in Plateau State.
