The Federal Government has established a technical committee to accelerate agricultural interventions, strengthen coordination across the sector and advance efforts to improve food security in Nigeria.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, GCON, constituted the committee during a high-level meeting on agricultural sector performance and strategic interventions at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The committee will focus on wheat production, dry-season farming and livestock development, which are key components of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s food security emergency plan.
The meeting, which followed a broader engagement with President Tinubu, brought together senior government officials and agricultural sector managers to assess ongoing interventions, address implementation challenges and identify measures to improve productivity.
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, CON, said discussions centred on expanding wheat production and dry-season farming while improving coordination among relevant ministries, departments and agencies.
Kyari explained that increasing domestic wheat production is a strategic priority for reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imports and strengthening self-sufficiency in a crop essential to the country’s food system.
He added that expanding dry-season farming would support year-round agricultural production, increase farmers’ incomes and help stabilise food prices throughout the year.
According to the Minister, the technical committee will bring together representatives of relevant ministries, departments and agencies to coordinate existing interventions and develop practical recommendations for implementation.
The committee is also expected to harmonise agricultural programmes across government institutions, eliminate duplication of efforts and ensure that resources reach farmers efficiently and promptly.
Kyari reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting year-round farming and strengthening collaboration with state and local governments to maximise available resources and improve agricultural productivity.
The committee will be coordinated by Ms Marion Moon, Technical Adviser to the Vice President on Agriculture and Head of the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit. She is expected to provide technical leadership, facilitate inter-agency collaboration and ensure the timely implementation of the committee’s mandate.
