The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s livestock sector through strategic partnerships aimed at improving animal health, expanding local production and stimulating economic growth.
The Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, made this known while receiving a delegation from Chromedix Pharmaceuticals Limited, led by its Team Lead, Dr. Dennis Brownie, during a presentation on the company’s proposed Veterinary Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Initiative in Abuja.
The Minister noted that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s livestock transformation agenda and has the potential to improve access to quality veterinary healthcare products while reducing the country’s dependence on imported pharmaceuticals.
According to him, the engagement highlights the importance of public-private sector collaboration in advancing sustainable livestock development, strengthening animal health systems and building local industrial capacity for both Nigeria and the wider African market.
Alhaji Maiha reiterated the Ministry’s readiness to support credible partnerships that will accelerate growth in the livestock sector, describing the proposed project as a significant step towards transforming Nigeria’s livestock and pharmaceutical industries.
Earlier, Dr. Dennis Brownie explained that the visit was aimed at presenting Chromedix’s veterinary pharmaceutical manufacturing proposal, aligning it with the Ministry’s development priorities, seeking guidance on market and product needs and exploring areas of government support and collaboration.
He revealed that the company plans to establish Nigeria’s first local manufacturing facility for veterinary hormonal products, a development expected to reduce reliance on imported veterinary medicines and improve access to essential animal health solutions.
Dr. Brownie further disclosed that the initiative forms part of Chromedix’s broader vision to develop the first hormonal pharmaceutical manufacturing platform in Sub-Saharan Africa, serving both veterinary and human healthcare needs.
The company also highlighted its strategic partnership with Bayer, which is expected to facilitate technology transfer and provide technical expertise for the development of hormonal manufacturing capabilities in Nigeria.
According to him, the collaboration will enhance local capacity, promote global best practices and accelerate the growth of a world-class pharmaceutical manufacturing ecosystem in the country.
Chromedix stated that the proposed project aligns with the Federal Government’s goals of improving livestock productivity, strengthening food security, promoting import substitution, creating skilled jobs and positioning Nigeria as a regional hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing.
The meeting ended with both parties expressing commitment to exploring areas of collaboration that will support the successful implementation of the initiative and contribute to the sustainable growth of Nigeria’s livestock sector.
