NIGERIAN CASSAVA SCIENTIST PROF. EGESI NAMED 2026 TOP AGRI-FOOD PIONEER.

Nigerian cassava breeder Prof. Chiedozie Egesi has been recognised as a 2026 Top Agri-food Pioneer by the World Food Prize Foundation, joining an elite group of 40 innovators selected from 30 countries across six continents.

The recognition, announced as part of the Foundation’s 40th anniversary celebrations, honours individuals whose innovative and science-based solutions are contributing significantly to global food security and agricultural development.

Prof. Egesi, who currently serves as the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), was honoured for his outstanding contributions to the development and dissemination of improved cassava varieties across Africa.

His work has played a key role in accelerating the adoption of high-yielding and disease-resistant cassava varieties including pro-vitamin A cassava which has helped improve nutrition and combat vitamin A deficiency among millions of people.

The third annual Top Agri-food Pioneers cohort comprises individuals aged between 16 and 81 years, representing diverse fields ranging from crop science and biotechnology to artificial intelligence-driven food innovations.

The World Food Prize Foundation noted that the awardees were selected for their commitment to addressing critical food system challenges through innovation, research and sustainable agricultural practices.

Prof. Egesi’s recognition further highlights Nigeria’s growing contribution to agricultural research and underscores the importance of scientific advancements in strengthening food security across Africa.

Stakeholders have described the honour as a significant achievement for Nigeria’s agricultural research community and a testament to the impact of sustained investment in crop improvement and innovation.

The National Root Crops Research Institute has continued to play a vital role in developing technologies and improved crop varieties aimed at increasing productivity, enhancing nutrition and supporting the livelihoods of farmers throughout the country.
