The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has received the Academy Provost of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Professor B. J. Ajibuah, on a courtesy visit to the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
The visit was aimed at strengthening institutional relations and exploring areas of mutual interest between both institutions, particularly in meteorological training, research and capacity development.
Discussions during the visit highlighted the importance of weather and climate information in military operations and strategic planning. Both institutions recognised that reliable meteorological information can support operational preparedness and improve decision-making.
The meeting also explored ways to integrate meteorological knowledge and weather and climate services into military training programmes. Such integration could equip military personnel with relevant information for planning and responding to weather-related challenges during operations.
Both institutions further considered opportunities for specialised meteorological training and professional development. The proposed initiatives are expected to strengthen the technical knowledge and skills of personnel while promoting a better understanding of weather and climate services.
Joint research also featured among the areas of potential collaboration. Through research partnerships, NiMet and the NDA could explore issues of shared interest and develop practical approaches to applying meteorological science in military and national development activities.
Knowledge exchange was another key area discussed during the visit. This would provide opportunities for experts from both institutions to share experiences, technical expertise and professional insights to support institutional growth and improve service delivery.
To provide a formal structure for the proposed partnership, both institutions considered establishing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement would define priority areas of engagement, clarify the framework for cooperation and support the implementation of mutually beneficial initiatives.
The proposed collaboration reflects the growing importance of partnerships between government institutions in addressing complex national challenges. By combining NiMet’s meteorological expertise with the NDA’s military training and professional development mandate, both institutions could strengthen their contributions to national security and institutional capacity building.
The engagement marks a step towards deeper cooperation between NiMet and the NDA, with potential benefits for training, research and operational planning. Further progress will depend on the development of the proposed collaboration framework and the implementation of agreed areas of engagement.
