An agricultural expert has identified rabbit farming as a profitable and sustainable agribusiness capable of improving livelihoods, creating employment opportunities and contributing to food security in Nigeria.

The expert noted that rabbit farming is increasingly gaining attention due to its low startup cost, fast reproduction rate, minimal space requirements and high market potential making it suitable for both small-scale and commercial farmers.
According to the expert rabbits are highly productive animals with short gestation periods and rapid growth rates allowing farmers to generate income within a relatively short time. This makes rabbit farming particularly attractive to youths, women and aspiring agripreneurs seeking affordable entry into livestock production.
The expert explained that rabbit meat is widely regarded as a healthy source of protein as it is low in fat and cholesterol while being rich in essential nutrients. This nutritional value has contributed to increasing consumer demand in both local and international markets.
In addition to meat production, rabbit farming also offers opportunities in breeding, manure production, fur processing and pet markets, creating multiple streams of income for farmers.
Stakeholders highlighted that rabbit manure is highly valued as an organic fertilizer which can support crop farming and promote environmentally friendly agricultural practices.
The expert further emphasized the importance of adopting proper management practices including adequate housing, balanced feeding, hygiene and disease control to ensure healthy stock and improved productivity.
Training and capacity building were also identified as critical factors for success with calls for increased awareness programmes and extension support to encourage more people to venture into rabbit farming.
Despite its potential stakeholders acknowledged challenges such as limited market awareness, inadequate access to finance and insufficient technical knowledge which continue to hinder the expansion of the industry.
The expert urged government agencies and financial institutions to support rabbit farming through credit facilities, training initiatives and market development programmes, to unlock its economic potential.
Experts believe that with proper investment and support rabbit farming can become a major contributor to income generation, nutrition and rural economic development.
The growing interest in rabbit farming underscores its potential as a viable and sustainable agricultural enterprise capable of driving prosperity and improving livelihoods across Nigeria.
