The initiative is designed to increase the visibility and market value of locally produced agricultural commodities while encouraging greater patronage of homegrown products within and outside the state.
Government officials explained that Benue State widely known as the “Food Basket of the Nation” possesses enormous agricultural potential with diverse products including yam cassava rice soybean maize sesame fruits and vegetables. The new initiative seeks to position these products more competitively in local regional and international markets.
According to the state government promoting indigenous agricultural products will not only improve farmers’ incomes but also stimulate value addition agro-processing and rural development across farming communities.
The programme is expected to involve exhibitions trade fairs branding campaigns and partnerships with private sector players to create wider market opportunities for local producers and agribusiness operators.
Stakeholders emphasized the importance of improving packaging quality standards and processing techniques to ensure that indigenous products meet modern consumer expectations and export requirements.
The government also highlighted the need to support farmers and small-scale processors through access to training financing improved inputs and market information to enhance productivity and competitiveness.
Experts noted that increased promotion of indigenous agricultural products can contribute significantly to economic diversification reduce dependence on imports and create employment opportunities especially for youths and women involved in agricultural value chains.
