A food security expert, Afioluwa Mogaji, has warned that the predicted flooding across 33 states of the federation could lead to a fresh increase in food prices and threaten food availability in the latter part of the year if urgent preventive measures are not implemented.
Mogaji, popularly known as AfricanFarmer Mogaji said actions taken by government authorities in the coming days would be critical to safeguarding agricultural production and maintaining stable food supplies between October and December.
According to him, widespread flooding could destroy farmlands, disrupt harvests, damage transportation networks and affect the movement of agricultural commodities thereby creating shortages and pushing food prices higher.
He stressed that proactive interventions are necessary to reduce the impact of the anticipated floods on farmers and vulnerable communities.
Mogaji urged relevant government agencies to intensify early warning campaigns, strengthen disaster preparedness and provide support to farmers in flood-prone areas to minimise losses.
He also emphasized the importance of investing in climate-resilient agricultural practices, improved drainage systems and emergency response mechanisms to protect food production and ensure continued availability of essential commodities.
The food security expert noted that Nigeria’s agricultural sector remains highly vulnerable to extreme weather events, making timely policy decisions and coordinated interventions crucial to preserving food security.
Stakeholders have continued to advocate stronger collaboration among government institutions, development partners and farming communities to mitigate the effects of climate-related disasters and build a more resilient food system.
With the peak of the rainy season approaching, experts warn that failure to act swiftly could have significant consequences for agricultural output, market supplies and food prices in the months ahead.
