SENATE COMMITTEE MOVES TO REFORM AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION, RESEARCH FRAMEWORK.

The Senate Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions has intensified efforts to reform Nigeria’s agricultural education and research framework as part of broader strategies aimed at strengthening innovation, improving productivity and advancing national food security.

The committee stated that the proposed reforms are designed to reposition agricultural institutions to better address emerging challenges within the sector while supporting modern farming practices, research development and capacity building.

According to lawmakers, enhancing agricultural education remains essential to producing skilled professionals, promoting technological advancement and improving the quality of research needed to drive sustainable agricultural transformation across the country.

The committee further highlighted the need for stronger collaboration among universities, research institutes, extension service providers and industry stakeholders to ensure that research outcomes effectively support farmers and agribusiness operators.

Stakeholders within the sector noted that outdated infrastructure, inadequate funding and limited access to modern research facilities continue to affect the performance and competitiveness of many agricultural institutions in Nigeria.

The reform initiative is expected to focus on improving curriculum development, strengthening research funding, encouraging innovation and enhancing practical training opportunities for students and researchers within the agricultural sector.

Experts also emphasised the importance of aligning agricultural education with current industry demands, climate-smart agriculture, mechanisation, biotechnology and digital farming systems capable of improving productivity and sustainability.

The Senate Committee reaffirmed its commitment to supporting policies and legislative measures that will strengthen agricultural research institutions, improve knowledge transfer and accelerate the development of a resilient and globally competitive agricultural sector in Nigeria.
