NCOS TARGETS FULL-SCALE AGRIBUSINESS DEVELOPMENT IN CUSTODIAL FARM CENTRES.

The Nigerian Correctional Service has unveiled plans to transform custodial farm centres into full-scale agribusiness hubs, as part of efforts to boost food production, enhance inmate rehabilitation, and contribute to national economic development.

Officials disclosed that the initiative is designed to reposition existing farm centres from subsistence-level operations to commercially viable agricultural enterprises, capable of producing crops and livestock at scale.

According to NCOS, the programme will focus on expanding activities across multiple value chains, including crop cultivation, livestock production, fisheries, and agro-processing, ensuring diversified and sustainable output.

The service emphasized that the initiative will also serve as a key component of its rehabilitation and reintegration strategy, providing inmates with practical skills in agriculture and agribusiness that can support their livelihoods after release.

Plans are underway to introduce modern farming techniques, mechanisation, and improved inputs, aimed at increasing productivity and efficiency across custodial farm centres nationwide.

In addition, NCOS intends to establish processing and storage facilities, enabling value addition and reducing post-harvest losses, while also improving revenue generation from farm outputs.

Stakeholders noted that the transformation of custodial farms into agribusiness centres could contribute significantly to food supply, job creation, and skills development, while reducing the operational costs of correctional facilities.

The initiative is also expected to involve partnerships with private sector players, agricultural institutions, and development organisations, to provide technical expertise, funding, and market access.

Experts have welcomed the move, highlighting its potential to promote inclusive agricultural development and social reintegration, while also supporting broader food security goals.

However, they emphasized the need for adequate funding, infrastructure, and effective management systems to ensure the sustainability of the programme.

The Nigerian Correctional Service reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging agriculture as a tool for rehabilitation, empowerment, and economic growth, noting that the initiative aligns with national efforts to diversify the economy.

With the planned transformation, custodial farm centres are set to become productive, self-sustaining agribusiness enterprises, contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s agricultural sector and socio-economic development.
