The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has called for deeper collaboration between Nigeria and Brazil’s agricultural research institution, Embrapa, to accelerate agricultural transformation and strengthen food security across Africa.
Kyari made the call at an Embrapa-organised side event at the 2026 Africa Food Systems Forum (AFSF2026), where he highlighted Brazil’s success in transforming its tropical agriculture and stressed the need for Nigeria to benefit from stronger cooperation in agricultural research, technology transfer, mechanisation and climate-resilient farming.
The Minister said Africa must develop agricultural solutions that reflect its own realities rather than simply importing technologies, advocating stronger South-South cooperation, joint research and knowledge exchange.
“Nigeria has the land, the people and the market to become an agricultural powerhouse,” Kyari said, stressing the need to translate the country’s agricultural potential into greater productivity, jobs and food security.He reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to deepen its partnership with Embrapa and Brazil, noting that the success of such cooperation should ultimately be measured by improved agricultural productivity and farmers’ prosperity.
The engagement formed part of activities at the 2026 Africa Food Systems Forum, which brings together policymakers, researchers, development partners and other stakeholders to discuss strategies for transforming Africa’s food systems.
