The Akwa Ibom State Government has unveiled a comprehensive strategy aimed at expanding oil palm cultivation across the 31 local government areas of the state as part of efforts to strengthen agricultural productivity and drive economic growth.
The initiative is designed to revitalise the oil palm sector, encourage large-scale cultivation, and position the state as a major contributor to Nigeria’s palm oil industry. Government officials stated that the programme would also create employment opportunities, improve rural incomes and stimulate agribusiness development across local communities.
According to the government, the strategy includes support for farmers through improved seedlings, extension services, technical training and enhanced access to agricultural inputs required to boost productivity and sustainability within the sector.
The state further highlighted plans to attract private sector investments into oil palm processing, value addition and marketing in order to strengthen the agricultural value chain and improve competitiveness in both local and international markets.
Stakeholders within the agricultural sector have welcomed the initiative, noting that increased investment in oil palm cultivation could contribute significantly to food security, industrial raw material supply and revenue generation for the state.
Analysts also observed that the renewed focus on oil palm development aligns with broader national efforts to diversify the economy through agriculture and reduce dependence on crude oil revenues.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting farmers, agribusiness operators and investors in achieving sustainable growth within the oil palm industry while promoting rural development and economic inclusion across the state.
