AgriGens Media on Monday, August 24th, 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the Ilorin Branch of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) as part of efforts to strengthen engagement and public awareness on social security and workers’ protection.
During the visit, the Head of Compliance, NSITF Ilorin Branch, Mr. Ibrahim Adam, explained that the organisation was established to provide social security protection for employees in both the formal and informal sectors of the Nigerian economy.
Adam said NSITF protects workers against the consequences of workplace-related accidents, disabilities and death that may occur in the course of employment.
He explained that where an employee dies in the course of service, the deceased worker’s children may receive dependants’ benefits until they attain the age of 21 or complete tertiary education, subject to the applicable provisions of the scheme.
According to him, NSITF has its roots in the former National Provident Fund, which operated from the 1960s until the establishment of NSITF through Decree 73 of 1993.
He noted that the Employees’ Compensation Scheme was later strengthened through legislation passed by the National Assembly in 2010, with full implementation commencing in July 2011.
Adam said the scheme has continued to provide social security protection for Nigerian workers, noting that its operations are also connected to international labour standards, as Nigeria is a member of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
He commended the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NSITF for reforms aimed at improving the implementation and visibility of the Employees’ Compensation Scheme.
The NSITF Head of Compliance further disclosed that the organisation regularly publicises its activities to educate Nigerians who may not be familiar with its mandate and benefits.
He stressed that NSITF should not be confused with conventional insurance companies, explaining that while insurance operates largely on a commercial basis, NSITF is a Federal Government social security initiative established to protect workers.
Adam urged employers and employees to familiarise themselves with the scheme and understand the benefits available to workers under the Employees’ Compensation Scheme.
The courtesy visit provided an opportunity for AgriGens Media and NSITF to discuss ways of improving public awareness and access to information on workers’ social security and compensation benefits.
