China has supplied Nigeria with its first complete set of full-cycle cassava mechanisation equipment, marking a major milestone in efforts to modernise cassava production and strengthen the country’s food security.
The development was announced in a statement issued by the Chinese Embassy in Abuja and signed by Dr. Duan Yun.
According to the statement, the equipment was officially handed over to the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), Umudike, Abia State, as part of ongoing agricultural science and technology cooperation between Nigeria and China.
The mechanisation package is expected to support the entire cassava production cycle, from land preparation and planting to harvesting and post-harvest operations, improving efficiency and reducing dependence on manual labour.
The embassy noted that the initiative represents a significant advancement in bilateral collaboration aimed at promoting agricultural innovation, increasing productivity and enhancing food security in Nigeria.
Officials said the equipment will also serve as a demonstration platform for researchers, extension officers and farmers, facilitating the transfer of modern mechanised farming technologies across the cassava value chain.
The collaboration is expected to strengthen the capacity of the National Root Crops Research Institute to conduct research, develop improved production techniques and promote the adoption of mechanised cassava farming among smallholder and commercial producers.
Stakeholders believe the introduction of full-cycle mechanisation will help reduce production costs, minimise post-harvest losses, increase cassava yields and improve the competitiveness of Nigeria’s cassava industry.
The initiative further underscores the growing agricultural partnership between Nigeria and China, with both countries seeking to deepen cooperation in agricultural research, technology transfer, mechanisation and capacity building.
The Federal Government and development partners have continued to identify mechanisation as a key driver of agricultural transformation, capable of improving productivity, attracting youth into farming and supporting Nigeria’s long-term food security and economic diversification goals.
