The Kwara State Government has announced Saturday August 29th 2026, as the date for the monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise for August across the state.
The exercise which is aimed at promoting a clean, healthy and safe environment, will take place between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. across the 16 Local Government Areas of the state.
The announcement was contained in a Press Statement issued by the Office of the Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, and make available by the Press Secretary to the Ministry of Environment Mrs Shakirat Muritala to press.
The statement urged residents across the state to participate fully in the sanitation exercise, stressing that there would be no vehicular or human movement across the state and Local Government Areas during the designated period.
According to the statement, waste management trucks will be deployed to various locations to facilitate the collection and subsequent disposal of waste at government-approved dump sites.
The Commissioner further disclosed that security agencies and environmental officers have been deployed to monitor compliance with the exercise. She warned that offenders would be apprehended and taken to the nearest mobile court for prosecution.
Residents were also warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse on pedestrian walkways, roadsides, drainages, canals and other unapproved locations.
The Ministry emphasised that indiscriminate waste disposal constitutes an offence punishable under the state’s environmental laws, urging residents to desist from practices capable of undermining the cleanliness and safety of their communities.
The Commissioner therefore called on residents to use the sanitation period to clear overgrown grasses and bushes, clean their homes and business premises and clear drainages and other areas where sources of nuisance or environmental hazards may be identified.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment across Kwara while appealing to residents to support the exercise through active participation and responsible waste management practices.
