Spotlight on African Women in Aquaculture as Global Stakeholders Mark International Year of the Women Farmer 2026

African women in aquaculture have taken center stage in the latest edition of the Agrigens Weekly Newsletter, as leading institutions and development partners intensify recognition of their contributions to food systems, livelihoods, and economic growth across the continent.

The spotlight feature aligns with the global commemoration of the 2026 International Year of the Women Farmer, an initiative led by the United Nations to amplify the role of women in agriculture and drive gender-inclusive policies worldwide.

In Africa, the commemoration is being championed by the AUDA-NEPAD in collaboration with the World Aquaculture Society Africa Chapter and other strategic partners. Together, they are promoting visibility, investment and capacity development for women engaged in aquaculture value chains from fish farming and processing to marketing and innovation.

Speaking on the initiative, stakeholders emphasized that empowering women in aquaculture is not only a matter of equity but a strategic pathway to achieving food security and sustainable development goals. Agrigens Media notes that increased collaboration among governments, private sector players and development organizations will be key to unlocking the full potential of women in the aquaculture sector. The spotlight also calls for deliberate investment in youth and women-led aquaculture enterprises to strengthen Africa’s blue economy.

As the year-long commemoration unfolds, stakeholders are urged to sustain momentum and ensure that policies translate into real impact at grassroots levels where many women farmers and aquaculture practitioners operate.

The Agrigens Weekly Newsletter reaffirms its commitment to amplifying voices sharing impactful stories and driving conversations that support inclusive agricultural transformation across
