The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), in collaboration with Tropical General Investments (TGI) Group, has launched a new agricultural initiative aimed at expanding livelihoods, promoting economic inclusion and strengthening food security in Nigeria.
The three-year programme is expected to support more than 5,000 farmers while creating over 10,000 jobs across Benue and Cross River states.
The initiative will focus on vulnerable populations, including refugees internally displaced persons (IDPs) and members of host communities with an estimated 25,000 to 35,000 people expected to benefit directly and indirectly from the project.
According to the partners, the programme is designed to improve agricultural productivity, strengthen value chains and provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for communities affected by displacement and economic hardship.
The initiative will promote inclusive agricultural development by improving access to farming inputs, technical training, market opportunities and other resources needed to enhance productivity and income generation.
Officials noted that empowering vulnerable populations through agriculture will not only improve household incomes but also foster self-reliance, social cohesion and long-term community resilience.
The collaboration between UNHCR and TGI Group reflects a shared commitment to leveraging agriculture as a tool for economic recovery, poverty reduction and sustainable development.
Stakeholders expressed optimism that the programme would contribute significantly to food security, employment creation and inclusive economic growth while strengthening the resilience of farming communities in the beneficiary states.
The initiative underscores the growing role of partnerships between humanitarian organisations and the private sector in delivering sustainable solutions that improve livelihoods and promote agricultural development across Nigeria.
