The Kwara State Government has launched the pilot phase of the Private Veterinary Service Programme to improve access to quality and timely veterinary care for livestock farmers across the state.

The programme was launched on Thursday, September 24th 2026, at the Kwara State Banquet Hall.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Livestock Development, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas, said the initiative would strengthen animal health services, particularly in underserved communities.

Thomas highlighted several interventions under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project, including demonstration farms for pastoralists, feed and fodder initiatives, livestock equipment and the training of about 200 farmers across the value chain.

She stressed the importance of animal health, noting that government alone could not meet the veterinary needs of livestock farmers and that private veterinary practitioners were needed to expand access to professional services.

Also speaking, the National Coordinator of L-PRES, Dr. Sanusi Abubakar, said the project was focused on transforming Nigeria’s livestock sector through infrastructure development and stronger collaboration between public institutions and private veterinary practitioners.

Representing the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria, Dr. Abdulakeem Durosinlorun said the programme would strengthen animal disease reporting and improve the availability of data for effective planning.

Meanwhile, the President of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria, Professor Matthew Adamu, disclosed that Nigeria has about 11,000 registered veterinarians, with 85 per cent practising in the private sector.

He reaffirmed the council’s commitment to ensuring that veterinary practice in Nigeria meets international standards.

The Kwara State L-PRES Project Coordinator, Mr. Olusoji Ayawoye, described the pilot programme as a major responsibility for the state and expressed optimism that its impact would become visible within months.

The programme is expected to expand access to veterinary care, strengthen disease surveillance, improve livestock productivity and boost the income of farmers across Kwara State.
