Nigerian women farmers are increasingly adopting solar-powered technologies to reduce production costs, minimise post-harvest losses and improve agricultural productivity as rising diesel prices and unreliable electricity continue to pose major challenges to food production across the country.
The growing transition to clean energy is enabling farmers to preserve agricultural produce more effectively, expand their businesses and reduce dependence on costly fossil fuels, while contributing to more sustainable farming systems.
According to stakeholders, solar-powered solutions such as irrigation pumps, cold storage facilities, dryers and processing equipment are helping women farmers improve efficiency, lower operating costs and increase the value of their agricultural produce.
The adoption of these technologies is also supporting efforts to tackle Nigeria’s estimated $10 billion in annual food losses, largely attributed to inadequate storage facilities, poor post-harvest handling and limited access to reliable energy.
Experts noted that improved cold storage and solar-powered preservation systems allow farmers to keep fruits, vegetables, dairy products and other perishables fresh for longer periods, reducing spoilage and increasing market opportunities.
Beyond reducing losses, the use of renewable energy is helping women-led agribusinesses become more resilient by lowering energy costs and improving productivity despite rising fuel prices and unstable power supply.
Stakeholders emphasized that expanding access to affordable solar technologies, financing and technical support will be critical to accelerating the adoption of climate-smart agriculture and strengthening food security nationwide.
They also called for increased investment in renewable energy solutions for rural farming communities, particularly for women and smallholder farmers who face greater barriers to accessing modern agricultural technologies.
