The Kwara State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project has commenced a statewide Napier grass development initiative across the 16 local government areas of the state to boost fodder availability, strengthen feed security, and enhance livestock productivity.
Speaking on the initiative, the State Project Coordinator, Mr. Olusoji Oyawoye, said it is designed to encourage livestock farmers to establish improved pastures, reduce dependence on natural grazing, and address dry-season feed shortages.
He described Napier grass as a high-yielding forage crop with excellent nutritional value and adaptability, noting that its cultivation will improve animal nutrition, increase milk and meat production, and enhance farmers’ incomes.
Mr. Oyawoye also urged farmers to adopt proper pasture management and forage conservation practices, including hay and silage production, to ensure year-round feed availability and improve livestock resilience.
The initiative aligns with the Kwara State Government’s commitment to transforming the livestock sector through investments in pasture development, farmer capacity building, extension services, and sustainable livestock production systems.
Participating farmers commended the initiative, noting that improved access to quality forage resources would reduce feeding costs, improve animal performance, and boost farm profitability.
Supported by the World Bank and participating state governments, the L-PRES Project continues to implement interventions aimed at increasing livestock productivity, improving food security, creating employment opportunities, and enhancing farmers’ livelihoods across Kwara State.
