The Jigawa State Government has launched a comprehensive agricultural support initiative targeting 90,000 smallholder farmers as part of efforts to increase agricultural productivity, reduce farming costs and strengthen food security across the state.
Governor Umar Namadi announced the initiative during the inauguration of the 2026 Wet Season Agricultural Support Programme, held on Saturday in Dutse.
Under the programme, the state government will distribute fertilisers, other essential farm inputs, 6,000 solar-powered water pumps and 1,185 motorcycles to agricultural extension workers to improve service delivery and support farmers during the farming season.
Governor Namadi said the initiative is designed to improve farmers access to critical agricultural inputs, enhance crop production and promote the adoption of modern farming practices.
He explained that the provision of subsidised inputs and equipment would help lower production costs, increase yields and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers across the state.
The governor noted that the distribution of solar-powered water pumps would expand irrigation farming, enabling farmers to cultivate crops beyond the rainy season and increase year-round agricultural production.
He added that the motorcycles allocated to extension workers would strengthen agricultural extension services by improving their mobility and enabling them to provide timely technical support to farmers in rural communities.
According to the governor, the programme forms part of the state’s broader agricultural transformation agenda aimed at achieving food sufficiency, creating employment opportunities and stimulating rural economic development.
Stakeholders commended the initiative, describing it as a strategic investment that will improve agricultural productivity, strengthen climate resilience and enhance food security in Jigawa State.
The Jigawa State Government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting farmers through sustained investments in agricultural infrastructure, extension services and modern technologies that promote sustainable agricultural growth and economic prosperity.
