The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has stepped up preparations for the successful hosting of the 41st Annual Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON), scheduled to take place from October 26 to 31, 2026.
As part of ongoing efforts to ensure a well-organised national event, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) held a strategic meeting on July 31, 2026, where members reviewed the proposed budget submitted by the Editorial Subcommittee alongside the draft programme of activities. Deliberations focused on prudent resource allocation, effective planning and the seamless execution of the conference.
Speaking during the meeting, the Secretary of the Local Organising Committee, Dr. Sherifat Adegbesan, explained that all subcommittees would present and defend their proposed budgets, beginning with the Editorial Subcommittee. According to her, the exercise is designed to promote transparency, accountability and ensure that expenditure aligns with the conference’s objectives.
Presenting the Editorial Subcommittee’s proposal, Dr. Oluwaseun Ojelade outlined budgetary requirements covering the production of the Book of Abstracts and Conference Proceedings, technical session materials, multimedia equipment, refreshments for technical officials, reviewers’ facilitation, and other editorial activities.
Dr. Ojelade also disclosed that 119 Acceptance Letters had already been issued to authors whose manuscripts successfully passed the review process, an indication of the strong interest and expected high level of participation in the conference.
Members of the Committee commended the Editorial Subcommittee for the progress made while recommending a comprehensive review of the proposed expenditure. They stressed the need to ensure value for money while maintaining high standards in the delivery of conference activities.
Earlier the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Prof. Festus Adeosun, emphasised the importance of aligning the conference budget with the approved programme of activities to guarantee efficient resource utilisation.
Prof. Adeosun, who also serves as Dean of Student Affairs at FUNAAB, praised committee members for their constructive contributions and encouraged all subcommittees to incorporate observations made during the deliberations into their revised proposals.
He expressed confidence that the dedication, teamwork and commitment demonstrated by members of the Local Organising Committee would ensure the successful hosting of the 41st FISON Annual Conference and Annual General Meeting which is expected to bring together fisheries scientists, researchers, academics, industry stakeholders, policymakers and development partners from across Nigeria and beyond to discuss emerging issues, innovations and sustainable development within the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
