FUNAAB ALUMNI UNVEIL 2,000-HECTARE FARMLAND TO BOOST FOOD SECURITY.

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has strengthened its contribution to Nigeria’s food security drive as its Alumni Association expands its agricultural investments through a 2,000-hectare farmland project.

The initiative received commendation from the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, HRM Oba Rasheed Ayotunde Olabomi Odundun IV, Asoludero, the Aragbiji of Iragbiji Land, during an inspection of the farmland on October 15th, 2026.

The expansive farmland features a 15-hectare plantain plantation alongside extensive cultivation of cassava, sesame, yam, groundnuts, bell peppers, tomatoes and other crops.

Impressed by the scale and diversity of the agricultural investments, Oba Olabomi commended the Alumni Association for translating its commitment to the University into productive ventures capable of advancing food security, agricultural entrepreneurship and sustainable development.

He noted that the partnership between FUNAAB and its Alumni presented significant opportunities to increase agricultural production, promote sustainable farming practices and support national efforts to improve food availability and affordability.

During the inspection, the Pro-Chancellor was informed that the plantain plantation was expected to be ready for harvesting in March 2027, marking a significant milestone in the Association’s agricultural enterprise.

The visit also provided an opportunity to assess the progress of farming activities and the project’s potential to boost food supply, create employment opportunities, promote agribusiness and strengthen practical agricultural training in line with FUNAAB’s mandate.

Speaking on the vision behind the initiative, the Global President of the FUNAAB Alumni Association, Otunba Bolaji Gbadamosi, reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to national food security, declaring, “We’re poised to feed the nation.”

He explained that the agricultural investments reflected the Alumni’s determination to support the University’s mission while translating alumni engagement into tangible contributions to agricultural development and Nigeria’s economic growth.

Otunba Gbadamosi also expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, for his invaluable support for the Association and its initiatives.

Beyond the farmland, the Pro-Chancellor inspected the ongoing construction of the FUNAAB Alumni Guest House and the Association’s operational Driving School. He was briefed on the facilities and other initiatives established to advance the Association’s objectives.

The Global President was accompanied by the Association’s Secretary, Mr. Femi Ajayi, during the inspection.

The visit underscored the growing role of university-alumni partnerships in promoting agricultural innovation, expanding agribusiness opportunities and advancing sustainable food production in Nigeria.
