Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has renewed her appeal to Nigerians to embrace home gardening following another successful harvest from the vegetable garden at the Presidential Villa, describing the practice as a practical solution to improving food security, promoting healthy living and supporting environmental sustainability.
The vegetable garden, established about two years ago under the #EveryHomeAGarden initiative, continues to produce a variety of nutritious vegetables, including spinach, waterleaf and fluted pumpkin (ugu).
Speaking after the latest harvest, the First Lady said the continued productivity of the garden demonstrates that households can cultivate fresh vegetables even within limited spaces, contributing to improved nutrition and reduced household food costs.
She noted that the #EveryHomeAGarden initiative was introduced to encourage families across Nigeria to establish home gardens as part of broader efforts to strengthen national food security and promote self-sufficiency in food production.
According to her, home gardening not only provides access to fresh and nutritious vegetables but also encourages healthier eating habits, supports environmental conservation and fosters greater appreciation for agriculture.
Senator Tinubu urged Nigerians, particularly women and young people, to take advantage of available spaces around their homes to grow vegetables and other food crops for household consumption and additional income.
She emphasized that widespread adoption of home gardening could help reduce pressure on food supplies, improve household nutrition and contribute to the country’s efforts to address food insecurity.
Agricultural stakeholders have continued to advocate urban and backyard farming as sustainable approaches to increasing access to fresh produce, reducing post-harvest losses and enhancing community resilience.
The First Lady reaffirmed her commitment to promoting initiatives that encourage household food production, healthy lifestyles and sustainable agricultural practices, expressing optimism that the #EveryHomeAGarden campaign will continue to inspire more Nigerians to cultivate food at home.
