EARLY PROCUREMENT SHIELDS NIGERIA FROM GLOBAL FERTILISER MARKET DISRUPTIONS.

As rising freight costs and tightening supply chains continue to unsettle fertiliser markets across Africa, Nigeria has largely avoided the worst of the disruptions through early procurement measures implemented under the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI).

Through PFI NPK Limited, the wholly owned subsidiary of the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and implementation vehicle for the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative, the Federal Government secured the country’s fertiliser requirements for the 2026 wet season months before the latest global market shocks emerged.

The proactive strategy has not only guaranteed adequate fertiliser supply for farmers but has also generated significant cost savings, highlighting the importance of forward planning in an increasingly volatile global market.

Industry observers described the development as a notable success at a time when many countries across Africa are grappling with rising prices and uncertainties in fertiliser availability caused by escalating logistics costs and supply chain constraints.

The timely procurement exercise is expected to support agricultural production during the 2026 wet season by ensuring that farmers have access to fertiliser when needed, thereby contributing to improved crop yields and national food security.

Officials noted that the approach demonstrates the effectiveness of strategic planning and coordinated interventions in safeguarding critical agricultural inputs from external shocks.

The achievement represents a positive development for Nigeria’s agricultural sector and underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting farmers and sustaining food production despite challenges in the global fertiliser industry.

With uncertainty continuing to affect international commodity markets, stakeholders say Nigeria’s experience offers an example of how early planning and efficient procurement can help mitigate risks and strengthen agricultural resilience.
