The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has expressed optimism that food prices could decline in the coming months as farmers begin to benefit from the Federal Government’s fertiliser support programme aimed at increasing agricultural productivity nationwide.
The association said the intervention, which provided fertilisers to thousands of farmers across the country is expected to reduce production costs, improve crop yields and increase food availability during the harvest season.
According to AFAN, improved access to fertiliser has enabled many farmers to cultivate larger areas of farmland and apply adequate nutrients to their crops, factors expected to translate into higher agricultural output.
The association noted that increased production would help ease pressure on food supplies, improve market availability and contribute to a gradual reduction in the prices of staple food commodities.
AFAN also commended the Federal Government for implementing initiatives designed to support smallholder farmers and strengthen national food security through timely access to critical farm inputs.
The association, however, stressed that sustaining lower food prices would also depend on addressing other challenges confronting the agricultural sector, including insecurity, high transportation costs, poor rural infrastructure and climate-related risks.
It urged the government to continue investing in agricultural support programmes, improve access to affordable inputs and strengthen extension services to ensure farmers achieve higher productivity.
Stakeholders believe that consistent policy support, combined with favourable weather conditions and improved market access, will help stabilise food supplies and enhance the affordability of food for Nigerians.
AFAN reaffirmed its commitment to working with government and other stakeholders to promote sustainable agricultural development and improve the livelihoods of farmers across the country.
