The African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) has intensified efforts to improve maize production in Kano State by introducing farmers to TELA hybrid maize, a climate-smart seed technology developed to increase yields, resist destructive pests and strengthen food security.
The awareness campaign was held in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area, where farmers, agricultural extension officers and other stakeholders received practical training on the benefits of the improved maize variety and the best agronomic practices needed to achieve higher productivity.
According to AATF, the TELA hybrid maize technology is designed to help farmers cope with the challenges of climate change while improving crop performance under varying environmental conditions.
The improved maize variety also offers protection against destructive insect pests, particularly the fall armyworm, one of the major threats to maize production across Nigeria and other African countries.
During the training, participants were educated on proper land preparation, seed planting, fertiliser application, weed management and other recommended farming practices to maximise the yield potential of the hybrid seed.
AATF emphasized that wider adoption of climate-smart technologies such as TELA maize will contribute to increased food production, improved farmer incomes and greater resilience in the face of changing weather patterns.
Extension officers were encouraged to continue supporting farmers with technical guidance to ensure the effective adoption of the improved maize variety across farming communities.
Stakeholders at the programme described the initiative as a significant step towards enhancing maize productivity, reducing crop losses and promoting sustainable agricultural development in Kano State.
The African Agricultural Technology Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to working with government agencies, research institutions and farming communities to expand access to innovative agricultural technologies that improve food security and strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
