The Farmers Supply Company Katsina (FASCOKT), in collaboration with the Cotton Producers and Merchants Association of Nigeria (COPMAN), has commenced the distribution of subsidised cotton seeds to 1,000 farmers across Katsina State as part of efforts to boost cotton production during the ongoing farming season.
The programme was officially flagged off on Saturday in Malumfashi, with the aim of improving farmers access to high-quality cotton seeds at affordable prices and encouraging increased cultivation across the state.
According to the organisers, the initiative is designed to support smallholder cotton farmers by reducing the cost of quality planting materials, improving productivity and revitalising the state’s cotton industry.
The subsidised seed distribution is expected to enhance crop yields, increase farmers incomes and strengthen the cotton value chain through the adoption of improved seed varieties.
Officials noted that expanding cotton cultivation will also contribute to the revival of Nigeria’s textile industry by ensuring a more reliable supply of locally produced raw materials for textile manufacturers.
The programme forms part of broader efforts to promote commercial cotton farming, create employment opportunities and stimulate economic activities within the agricultural sector.
Beneficiary farmers were encouraged to adopt recommended agronomic practices to maximise the performance of the improved seeds and achieve better harvests during the current farming season.
Stakeholders commended the partnership between FASCOKT and COPMAN, describing it as a strategic intervention that will improve access to quality farm inputs, strengthen cotton production and support the sustainable growth of the cotton industry in Katsina State.
The organisers reaffirmed their commitment to supporting cotton farmers through continued access to improved inputs, technical support and collaborative initiatives aimed at restoring Nigeria’s position as a major cotton-producing nation.
