The Federal Government has intensified efforts to unlock the vast economic potential of Nigeria’s livestock sector, unveiling plans to increase dairy production, attract private investment and create employment opportunities through the implementation of the National Ranching Policy.
The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, disclosed this during a tour of major livestock and dairy enterprises in Plateau State, where he assessed facilities and ongoing activities aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s dairy value chain.
During the visit, the minister toured Integrated Dairies Limited in Vom, Bach Farms in Bassa Local Government Area and Lush Farms along Bauchi Road, describing the facilities as strategic assets with the capacity to drive growth in livestock production and agribusiness development.
Maiha stated that the National Ranching Policy is designed to promote modern livestock management practices, improve productivity and support sustainable development within the sector.
According to him, increasing local dairy production remains a key priority of the Federal Government as Nigeria seeks to reduce its dependence on imported dairy products and bridge the gap between domestic demand and supply.
The minister noted that investments in ranching infrastructure, animal health, feed production and processing facilities would play a critical role in transforming the livestock industry into a major contributor to economic growth.
He emphasized that the government is committed to creating an enabling environment that will attract investors, encourage private sector participation and generate employment opportunities, particularly for women and youths.
Maiha further highlighted the importance of partnerships with established livestock and dairy enterprises in advancing the government’s agenda for food security, rural development and agricultural industrialisation.
Stakeholders in the sector have welcomed the initiative, noting that effective implementation of the National Ranching Policy could significantly enhance productivity, improve incomes for livestock farmers and strengthen Nigeria’s position within the regional dairy market.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to developing a modern, competitive and sustainable livestock industry capable of meeting the country’s growing demand for dairy and other livestock products while contributing to national economic development.
