The Federal Government has unveiled new measures aimed at improving poultry production by strengthening oversight of import allocations and introducing stricter performance-based monitoring across the industry to address supply shortages and enhance access to day-old chicks.
The development was disclosed in a statement signed by Henrietta Okokon, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, and made available to Agronigeria.
According to the statement, the initiative is in response to growing concerns that several approved poultry import quotas have not been fully utilised, a situation that has contributed to shortages of day-old chicks, increased production costs and reduced opportunities for poultry farmers across the country.
The Federal Government said the new monitoring framework would ensure that import allocations are efficiently utilised and that beneficiaries comply with established guidelines aimed at supporting the growth of the poultry industry.
Officials noted that the move is expected to improve the availability of day-old chicks, enhance productivity and strengthen the entire poultry value chain.
The government further emphasized that adopting a performance-based approach would promote transparency, accountability and effective resource utilisation within the sector.
Stakeholders believe the measures will help address supply gaps, reduce the pressure on poultry producers and support efforts to increase domestic production of poultry products.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to enhance food security, create employment opportunities and stimulate sustainable growth within Nigeria’s livestock sector.
With demand for poultry products continuing to rise, the government reaffirmed its commitment to implementing policies that will strengthen local production, improve farmers access to critical inputs and ensure the long-term development of the industry.
