PERISHABLE GOODS TRADERS IN MANDATE SEEK GOVERNMENT SUPPORT OVER RAISING BUSINESS CHANLLENGES.

The weekly AGRIC DISCUSSION programme on Agripreneur Insights TV every Tuesday, featured trending discussions on the mandate and activities of the Travellers Union of Perishable Association, Mandate Market Ilorin, Kwara State.

Speaking as the guest on the programme, the Vice Chairman of the Association, Mr Olateju Abdulamidi explained that the union is involved in the transportation and marketing of perishable goods across different parts of the country.

He listed some of the major perishable products handled by members of the association to include Tomatoes, Scotch Bonnet Pepper, Bell Pepper and Onions.

According to him, Tomato production has been greatly affected this year due to the delay in rainfall, noting that the late arrival of the rainy season had a drastic effect on tomato yield.

He explained that the current demand for tomatoes is higher than the quantity available in the market, leading to scarcity and increased prices.

Mr. Abdulamidi also identified bad roads as a major challenge affecting the transportation of perishable goods, stressing that poor road networks often result in delays, spoilage and additional transportation costs.

He further stated that the increase in petroleum prices has negatively affected the business, as transport fares and operational expenses continue to rise.

Advising youths, he described the perishable goods business as a fast route to success for determined individuals, adding that those interested in the business must be prepared to overcome various challenges associated with the trade.

The Vice Chairman appealed to both the Federal and Kwara State Governments to urgently address the issue of bad roads and high fuel prices to ease the burden on traders and transporters.

The Vice Chairman appeal to the Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, to support traders with loans and grants, noting that high bank interest rates are taking a toll on members of the association.

Mr. Abdulamidi added that the association remains open to partnerships with government agencies and other stakeholders aimed at improving the perishable goods business and strengthening food distribution across the country.
