The World Agriculture Forum (WAF) Nigeria Country Director, Mr Alexander Isong, has called for increased investment in agricultural technology, modern storage facilities and efficient food supply chains to strengthen Nigeria’s food security.
Isong made the call in a World Food Day message, emphasising the need for a comprehensive approach to agricultural development that goes beyond increasing food production to address post-harvest losses, market access and other challenges across the agricultural value chain.
According to him, improving agricultural productivity alone will not guarantee food security unless farmers can preserve their produce, access reliable markets and obtain the financial resources needed to sustain and expand their operations.
He stressed that investment in modern storage infrastructure and efficient food distribution systems would help reduce post-harvest losses, improve the availability of food and ensure that more agricultural produce reaches consumers in good condition.
The WAF Nigeria Country Director also highlighted the importance of agricultural technology in modernising farming practices, improving productivity and strengthening the capacity of farmers to respond to emerging challenges.
He further identified access to finance and the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices as essential components of a resilient food system capable of supporting farmers and meeting the country’s growing food needs.
Isong’s statement received wide coverage across Nigerian media, drawing attention to the importance of coordinated efforts to address structural challenges within the agricultural sector.
He noted that achieving sustainable food security requires collaboration among governments, farmers, agribusinesses, financial institutions, researchers and development partners to develop practical solutions that benefit stakeholders across the food system.
Through the WAF Nigeria Country Council, the World Agriculture Forum expressed its commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to translate these priorities into practical projects with measurable outcomes.
The initiative is expected to support efforts to strengthen agricultural value chains, improve food preservation, expand market opportunities for farmers and promote sustainable agricultural development.
The message reinforces the need for strategic investment and stronger partnerships to build a more resilient food system, reduce food losses and improve access to safe and affordable food across Nigeria.
