NIMET RECEIVES AFRIGEO WEATHER, CLIMATE AND EARLY WARNING SERVICES AWARD

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has received the AfriGEO Weather, Climate and Early Warning Services Award in recognition of its contributions to weather and climate services, early warning systems and climate resilience through the use of Earth observation technologies.

The award was presented to the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, by the Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Prof. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, during the 10th AfriGEO Gala Dinner held in Abuja on October 7, 2026.

The presentation formed part of activities marking the 10th AfriGEO Symposium, a major African platform focused on advancing the application of Earth observation, geospatial information and environmental intelligence to promote sustainable development and strengthen resilience across the continent.

The 2026 symposium was held under the theme, “Earth Observations for a Resilient Africa,” and brought together policymakers, scientists, development partners, private-sector stakeholders and practitioners from AfriGEO’s 33 African member states.

The recognition highlights NiMet’s role in using weather, climate and Earth observation information to support early warning, improve preparedness and provide information that can contribute to evidence-based decision-making across different sectors.

Weather and climate information remains critical to sectors such as agriculture, aviation, water resources, disaster management and environmental planning, particularly as communities face increasing risks associated with climate variability and extreme weather events.

NiMet said it remains committed to strengthening the use of weather, climate and Earth observation information to improve early warning systems and enhance climate resilience across Nigeria.

The Agency also reaffirmed its commitment to innovation, strategic partnerships and the delivery of timely and actionable climate information in support of the Federal Government’s climate-resilience agenda.

The AfriGEO recognition further underscores the importance of Earth observation and reliable climate information in building a safer, better-informed and more resilient Nigeria and Africa.
