The Zamfara State Government has allocated more than 10 per cent of its annual budget to agriculture in both 2025 and 2026, in line with the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).
Governor Dauda Lawal disclosed this in Gusau during the flag-off of the Renewed Hope Seed Support Programme implemented by the National Agricultural Seeds Council (NASC) in collaboration with the state government.
The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Ya’u Haruna Gamji, said the investment reflected his administration’s commitment to strengthening agriculture as a major driver of economic growth, food security and resilience.
Lawal said agriculture remained the backbone of Zamfara’s economy and provided employment for more than 80 per cent of the state’s active population.
He disclosed that the state was also at an advanced stage of procuring 250 tractors and agricultural implements from China to boost mechanised farming.
The governor further revealed that Zamfara had secured a $100 million agricultural intervention partnership with Turkey as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s agricultural sector.
Speaking on the Renewed Hope Seed Support Programme, Lawal said the Federal Government had distributed 46 metric tonnes of certified seeds to 4,600 farmers in the state.
He explained that the intervention was aimed at cushioning the impact of the prolonged dry spell that followed the early onset of the 2026 rainy season.
The governor urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the seeds and work closely with agricultural extension agents to maximise yields.
He expressed optimism that sustained investment and collaboration between the state and Federal Government would improve agricultural productivity and strengthen food security.
“Let the agricultural sector lead the way towards a more resilient and prosperous Zamfara and Nigeria in general,” Lawal said.
