EDO ASSEMBLY APPROVES BILL TO ESTABLISH COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY.

The Edo State House of Assembly has approved legislation establishing the Edo State College of Agriculture, Science and Technology, following the repeal of the Edo State College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Law, 2019.

The bill received the support of lawmakers on Tuesday after detailed consideration during the Committee of the Whole House.

Following the adoption of the committee’s report, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, directed the Clerk of the House to transmit the clean copy of the bill to Governor Monday Okpebholo for assent.

The new legislation is expected to provide the legal framework for the establishment and operation of the institution, with a broader mandate to deliver education and training in agriculture, science and technology.

Lawmakers noted that the new college will contribute to the development of skilled manpower, promote agricultural innovation and support scientific and technological advancement within the state.

The institution is also expected to strengthen research, technical education and capacity building while producing graduates equipped to meet the demands of Nigeria’s evolving agricultural and industrial sectors.

Stakeholders believe the establishment of the college will enhance human capital development, encourage agricultural entrepreneurship and support Edo State’s broader economic growth objectives.

The move aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen agricultural education and equip young people with the knowledge and practical skills required to drive innovation, improve productivity and enhance food security.

The bill now awaits the assent of Governor Monday Okpebholo before it becomes law and the process of establishing the institution can formally commence.
