The Ogun State Government has commenced the process of establishing a Steering Committee for the National Community Food Bank Programme (NCFBP) ahead of the programme’s inauguration in the South-West region, scheduled to take place in the state on July 25.
The National Community Food Bank Programme is a multi-sectoral initiative championed by the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu and is designed to improve access to locally produced nutritious food for vulnerable households while helping to reduce hunger across the country.
According to the state government, the Steering Committee will coordinate the implementation of the programme in Ogun State, working with relevant stakeholders to ensure effective delivery and sustainability.
The initiative is expected to strengthen food security by promoting the distribution of nutritious, locally sourced food to vulnerable groups, including low-income families and communities affected by food insecurity.
Officials noted that the programme also aims to support local farmers by creating reliable channels for the procurement and distribution of agricultural produce, thereby stimulating local agricultural production and rural livelihoods.
The Ogun State Government reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government, development partners and community-based organisations to ensure the successful implementation of the initiative.
Stakeholders believe the National Community Food Bank Programme will play a significant role in reducing hunger, improving nutrition and enhancing community resilience through a sustainable, locally driven food support system.
The inauguration of the South-West chapter of the programme is expected to mark an important milestone in the nationwide rollout of the initiative, reinforcing ongoing efforts to strengthen food security and improve the welfare of vulnerable Nigerians.
