The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD) has commenced the validation of the National Livestock Information Management System (NLIMS), marking a significant step toward addressing longstanding data gaps within Nigeria’s livestock sector.
The digital platform is expected to serve as the country’s central livestock data repository, providing reliable and real-time information for effective decision-making across the industry.
According to the ministry, the initiative is designed to equip government institutions, investors and other stakeholders with accurate data needed for policy formulation, resource allocation, programme implementation and strategic sector planning.
Officials noted that the absence of comprehensive livestock data has for years posed challenges to the development of the sector, limiting effective planning and the delivery of targeted interventions.
The National Livestock Information Management System is expected to enhance transparency, improve coordination and strengthen evidence-based decision-making in areas such as animal health, production, marketing and value chain development.
Stakeholders believe the platform will also support investment decisions by providing credible information capable of attracting private sector participation and promoting sustainable growth within the livestock industry.
