AGRIGENS NEWSLETTER VOLUME 13, ARTICLE 2.

Key Agricultural Developments Shape Nigeria’s Food, Livestock and Agribusiness Sector.

Nigeria’s agriculture and livestock sectors continue to witness strategic interventions aimed at improving food security, livestock productivity, agribusiness sustainability and economic opportunities for farmers and traders across the country.

One of the major developments recorded during the period was the commissioning of a veterinary service shop by the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Kwara State Chapter to support poultry farmers in Ilorin.

The newly established veterinary service shop known as MARAPAN Veterinary Services was commissioned to address major challenges affecting poultry farmers, particularly vaccine failures, high cost of veterinary drugs and limited access to quality livestock health services.

Speaking during the commissioning the Chairman of PAN Kwara State Chapter, Engr. Sanusi Abdulwaheed Kolapo, noted that the initiative was designed to support poultry and livestock farmers in the state by providing affordable veterinary products and professional services. He added that the intervention would contribute significantly to improving poultry production and reducing farmers’ operational burdens.

In another development, the Bank of Agriculture (BOA) has unveiled plans aimed at stabilizing food prices across the country to protect farmers and improve food security. The initiative is expected to address market fluctuations, strengthen agricultural value chains and ensure greater support for local food production.

The food price stabilization strategy is also projected to cushion the impact of rising production costs while encouraging farmers to remain productive despite prevailing economic pressures.

Meanwhile, traders dealing in perishable goods at Mandate Market in Ilorin have appealed for urgent government support over increasing business challenges threatening their livelihoods.

The traders expressed concerns over rising transportation costs, poor storage facilities, unstable electricity supply and post-harvest losses affecting the profitability of their businesses. They called on relevant authorities to provide infrastructure support, cold storage facilities and financial assistance to help sustain their operations and reduce food wastage.

Similarly, the Federal Government has reaffirmed efforts to strengthen apiculture development under the Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy (LG-GAS) framework as part of broader plans to diversify livestock production and improve economic opportunities for farmers.

The initiative seeks to promote beekeeping activities, increase honey production and encourage private sector participation in apiculture value chains while supporting rural livelihoods and environmental sustainability.

On the occasion of World Milk Day 2026, the Federal Government also reaffirmed its commitment to gender-inclusive dairy growth, emphasizing the critical role women play in strengthening household nutrition, rural livelihoods and agricultural productivity.

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development reiterated plans to strengthen dairy policies that promote inclusiveness and empower women dairy farmers through improved access to opportunities, capacity building and sectoral participation.

Furthermore, efforts to revive coffee production in Nigeria received a boost as the Cooperative Financing Agency of Nigeria (COCEFAAA) and the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) entered into partnership to rejuvenate coffee cultivation across the country.

The collaboration is expected to enhance coffee production through improved seedlings, farmer support initiatives, research and market opportunities, with the aim of repositioning Nigeria as a competitive player in coffee production.

Stakeholders believe these interventions across livestock, crop production, agribusiness and food systems will contribute significantly toward improving agricultural productivity, strengthening food security and enhancing livelihoods nationwide.
