AGRIGENS WEEKLY NEWSLETTER VOLUME 5.

The latest edition of the AGRIGENS Weekly Newsletter highlights key developments across Nigeria’s agriculture, livestock, agribusiness and rural development sectors, focusing on food production, animal welfare, strategic partnerships, rural intervention projects and economic transformation.

Leading the headlines, the Association of Fish Farmers and Aquaculture Practitioners of Kwara State reviewed catfish prices upward due to rising production costs affecting fish farmers and aquaculture operators. Industry stakeholders attributed the development to the increasing prices of fish feed, transportation, fuel and other production inputs, noting that the situation continues to place pressure on fish production and supply within the aquaculture sector.

In another major development, the Federal Government of Nigeria advocated enhanced animal welfare standards as part of efforts to strengthen livestock productivity, improve food safety and align Nigeria’s livestock industry with global best practices. Officials stressed the importance of proper animal care, disease prevention and improved livestock management systems in achieving sustainable growth within the sector.

The government of Kwara State also deepened its partnership with OLAM Agri to curb post-harvest losses and improve agricultural value chain efficiency. The collaboration is expected to support farmers through better storage systems, modern processing facilities and improved market access aimed at reducing food waste and strengthening food security.

On the continental scene, the Pan African Farmers Organization warned that ongoing global crises are intensifying pressure on African farmers and agrifood value chains. The organization highlighted the effects of inflation, climate change, insecurity, supply chain disruptions and rising production costs on food systems and rural livelihoods across Africa.

Meanwhile, the Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation commissioned a solar-powered borehole project in Ilorin to improve access to clean water and enhance community welfare. The initiative is expected to support public health, improve living conditions and contribute to sustainable development within the benefiting communities.

In the livestock sector, the Federal Government of Nigeria identified livestock development as a major driver of economic growth, employment generation and food security. Authorities emphasized the need for increased investment in dairy production, meat processing, veterinary services, livestock infrastructure and modern animal husbandry practices to unlock the sector’s full economic potential.

As always, AgriGens remains committed to promoting agricultural excellence, supporting food security and amplifying voices within the value chain.
