INAUGURAL WORLD LABORATORY DAY CELEBRATED AT FEDERAL COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE.

The inaugural World Laboratory Day has been celebrated at the Federal College of Agriculture, highlighting the critical role of laboratories in advancing agricultural research, education, and national development.

The event brought together students, researchers, academic staff, and industry stakeholders, who emphasized the importance of laboratory science in driving innovation and improving productivity across the agricultural sector.

Speakers at the event noted that laboratories serve as the backbone of scientific progress, enabling research, testing, analysis, and the development of improved technologies that support modern agriculture.

Participants highlighted the role of laboratories in areas such as soil analysis, crop improvement, animal health diagnostics, food safety testing, and environmental monitoring, all of which are essential for sustainable agricultural practices.

According to the organisers, the celebration aimed to raise awareness about the need for well-equipped laboratories, skilled personnel, and continuous investment in scientific infrastructure, particularly in educational institutions.

Stakeholders stressed that strengthening laboratory capacity is crucial for addressing key challenges in agriculture, including low productivity, disease outbreaks, and quality control issues.

In addition, the event underscored the importance of integrating practical laboratory training into academic programmes, ensuring that students acquire hands-on skills and are better prepared for careers in science and agriculture.

Experts also called for increased collaboration between academic institutions, government agencies, and the private sector, to promote research and innovation that can translate into real-world solutions.

Participants noted that World Laboratory Day provides an opportunity to recognise the contributions of scientists, laboratory technicians, and researchers who play a vital role in advancing knowledge and supporting development.

However, concerns were raised about challenges such as inadequate funding, outdated equipment, and limited maintenance, which continue to hinder the effectiveness of laboratories in many institutions.

The event concluded with a call for sustained investment and policy support to strengthen laboratory systems, ensuring they can effectively contribute to agricultural transformation, food security, and economic growth.

The celebration marks a significant step in promoting the importance of science and innovation in Nigeria’s agricultural and educational sectors.
