NALDA LAUNCHES 5,000-HECTARE FARM ESTATE IN KWARA TO BOOST FOOD SECURITY, RURAL ECONOMY

The National Agricultural Land Development Authority has launched a 5,000-hectare farm estate in Kwara State, in a major effort to enhance food production, create jobs, and stimulate rural economic development.

Officials disclosed that the large-scale farm estate is part of NALDA’s broader mandate to develop agricultural land, promote commercial farming, and attract investment into the sector. The initiative is expected to serve as a model for integrated agricultural development across the country.

According to the agency, the estate will support the cultivation of key crops and livestock activities, with a focus on mechanised farming, improved inputs, and modern agricultural practices to maximise productivity.

The project is designed to benefit youths, women, and smallholder farmers, providing them with access to land, training, and employment opportunities. Beneficiaries are expected to participate in various stages of the value chain, including production, processing, and marketing.

NALDA emphasized that the farm estate will also feature support infrastructure, such as irrigation systems, storage facilities, access roads, and processing units, to ensure efficiency and reduce post-harvest losses.

Stakeholders noted that the initiative will contribute to increasing local food supply, reducing dependence on imports, and stabilising food prices, while also boosting income levels in rural communities.

In addition, the project is expected to attract private sector participation, creating opportunities for agribusiness investments and partnerships that can further expand agricultural activities within the estate.

Experts have described the launch as a significant step toward large-scale agricultural transformation, noting that integrated farm estates can drive productivity, create jobs, and strengthen value chains.

However, they also highlighted the need for effective management, sustained funding, and security, to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of the project.

NALDA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s agricultural development through innovative land-use strategies and strategic investments, emphasizing that the initiative aligns with national efforts to achieve food security and economic diversification.

With the launch of the 5,000-hectare farm estate, the agency is positioning Kwara State as a hub for modern agriculture, rural development, and agribusiness growth.
