KATSINA LAUNCHES FERTILISER PROGRAMME TO SUPPORT 2026 WET SEASON FARMERS.

The Katsina State Government has launched a fertiliser distribution programme aimed at supporting farmers ahead of the 2026 wet farming season, in a bid to boost crop production and enhance food security.

State officials disclosed that the initiative is designed to ensure timely access to affordable and quality fertilisers, enabling farmers to prepare adequately for the planting season and improve yields.

According to the government, the programme targets thousands of smallholder farmers across the state, with a focus on key staple crops such as maize, rice, sorghum, and millet. Beneficiaries are expected to receive subsidised fertiliser to reduce production costs and encourage wider participation in farming activities.

The intervention is part of broader efforts to address challenges associated with rising input costs, which have continued to affect farmers’ productivity and profitability. By easing access to essential inputs, the government aims to support increased cultivation during the wet season.

Officials emphasized that the distribution process will be closely monitored to ensure transparency and equitable access, preventing diversion and ensuring that the fertilisers reach genuine farmers.

In addition to input support, the programme is expected to be complemented by extension services and technical guidance, helping farmers apply fertilisers efficiently and adopt best agronomic practices.

Stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, noting that timely access to fertilisers is critical for improving soil fertility and maximizing crop output. They added that such interventions can contribute significantly to stabilising food supply and reducing market prices.

Experts also highlighted the importance of integrating fertiliser distribution with other support measures, including improved seeds, irrigation systems, and mechanisation, to achieve optimal results.

However, concerns were raised about potential challenges such as logistics, distribution inefficiencies, and affordability, which must be addressed to ensure the success of the programme.

The Katsina State Government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting farmers and strengthening the agricultural sector through targeted interventions and policy support.

With the launch of the fertiliser programme, the state is positioning itself to enhance productivity, support farmers’ livelihoods, and ensure a successful 2026 wet farming season.
